Is Chiropractic Care Appropriate During Pregnancy?
if you're wondering whether it's safe to visit a chiropractor when you're pregnant, my answer is a resounding yes. Not only is it safe, but it can be beneficial for both mother and baby. For the mother, pregnancy chiropractic care can not only help relieve back, joint, and hip discomfort, it can rebalance the pelvis. As far as the baby is concerned, the realigned spine will improve the mother's posture and give him or her more room to grow and move.
Since back pain goes hand in hand with pregnancy, many chiropractic patients who know chiropractors' benefits have no qualms about seeking prenatal care. However, those who have not experienced it often have concerns. But many are encouraged when they learn that not only is pregnancy chiropractic care included in the curriculum of chiropractic colleges everywhere, there are some chiropractors who specialize in treating mothers-to-be. But even if your chiropractor is not a prenatal chiropractic care specialist, he or she will use a table that adjusts to accommodate the pregnant body and only use techniques that put no pressure on the mother's abdomen.
Having said that, I need to point out that there are some pregnancy conditions that preclude my providing them with pre-natal chiropractic care. These are
any degree of placental separation from the uterine wall.
And I would be remiss if I didn't tell pregnant patients that they should tell their obstetrician that they want me to make an appointment with me.
